No fine jewelry is fully invincible in seawater — even solid 18k gold reacts to harsh chemicals over time. "Waterproof" in the coastal-jewelry world means a piece is built to handle daily exposure to water, salt and sunscreen without tarnishing, peeling or breaking. The two materials that hold up best are gold-filled brass (a thick layer of real gold bonded to the base, typically 1/20 by weight) and PVD-coated stainless steel, which uses a vacuum-deposited gold layer fused at very high temperature.
